The Truth About Christmas is Amazing!

Christmas is an awesome and, sometimes, complicated time for Christians. We find ourselves enjoying the season, the lights, the music, even the flavors, all while celebrating in a culture filled with commercial noise, sentimental traditions, and fantasies that have little to do with the actual event we commemorate. It’s easy to lose sight of what matters.

Pastor John MacArthur, delivers a thought-provoking sermon “The Truth About Christmas,” that cuts through the cultural clutter to address the reason for the season. Rather than simply critiquing the secular trappings of Christmas, MacArthur tackles something deeper: the fundamental lies our culture believes about life itself.

A World Built on Lies

MacArthur identifies several pervasive lies that dominate modern thinking:

Life is random. Many people believe there’s no one in charge, no design, no pattern. We’re just grabbing at whatever comes our way and hoping for the best or worse, we’re led by fate, which is nothing more than some spiritual fairy dust.

Truth is relative. Without a lawgiver or judge, people conclude that truth is whatever you want it to be. Your truth, my truth…no absolute standard exists.

Man is basically good. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, our culture clings to the belief humans are inherently good and, left to their own devices, will behave properly.

The goal of life is personal satisfaction. We live in a society obsessed with self-fulfillment, comfort, and possession as the measure of a successful life.

These aren’t just philosophical ideas. Without knowing the truth of God, people easily let these lies shape how they approach everything, even Christmas.

The Real Truth

Against this backdrop of cultural deception, MacArthur brings us back to the simple, powerful truth of Scripture. It’s summed up in John 3:16: God, who is absolutely holy and sovereign over everything, loves the world. He loves sinners (spoiler alert: He doesn’t love sin). And He sent His Son for all of us.

That’s what Christmas is really about—not a helpless infant in a manger we sentimentalize once a year, but the incarnation of God Himself, who came to rescue humanity from sin and death. We worship a risen and exalted Christ who has all power in heaven and earth.

The good news is that while we cannot change ourselves, God can change us. Through faith in Jesus Christ, He makes us new creations. This is the truth that sets Christmas apart from every cultural tradition and commercial excess.

Why This Matters

Christmas becomes truly meaningful when we strip away the lies and focus on the truth. The church has a responsibility to proclaim reality in a world drowning in deception. When you understand the truth about God’s holiness, humanity’s sinfulness, and Christ’s sacrifice, the birth of Jesus takes on eternal significance.

This Christmas season, let’s celebrate the truth in John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

That’s an event worth celebrating any time of year, but especially at Christmas. As they say, Jesus is the reason for the season.
