Spoiler: You Can’t Please People and Serve God

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.’”

Galatians 1:10

I don’t want to be a people pleaser, but I want to please people. Nobody wants to make people unhappy, frustrated, or uncomfortable. But, when we try to keep people happy, we gradually become what is almost always referred to negatively, as a people pleaser. We compromise our convictions in order to avoid another argument or uncomfortable moment. And, when we do that, we fail to put God first.

Read the verse again “…If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

What Did Paul Know?

Paul says “If I were still trying to please man…” Still. Paul understands. There was a time when Paul lived for human approval, but he walked away from it when he met Christ. And, he never looked back. He’s been on both sides. He knows what it means to seek approval of man — to live in the world. And, he knows what it means to be a servant of Christ.

Paul knew that you can’t do both.

Galatians 1:10

Do you seek the approval of man, or of God? This verse is clear; it is a binary choice. And, it isn’t always an easy one.

Serving Christ means you check your words, your silence, and your choices against the standards set by God, not against the reactions of the people around you. And, when those two things conflict (and they always will), you choose to serve God.

The Study

People Pleaser or Servant of God is the second study in Volume 1: Do Not Fear Man, part of the Ensnared No More: Daily Moments of Discernment series.

Each Moment is designed to be brief but meaningful — deeper than a quick devotional, but still something you can work through in the middle of a real, busy day. No fluff. No filler. Just Scripture, honest reflection, and space to let God’s Word do what it does.

In this study, you’ll find the full passage in context, a look at what it actually means (including the translation of certain words from the original language that make the message in the verse even stronger), reflection questions that will challenge you to examine where the fear of man might be quietly shaping your choices, and space to pray and journal your response.

It’s not long. It is honest. And it might change the way you walk through the next uncomfortable interaction.

It’s designed to be deeper than a quick devotional, but still doable in real life.
