Biblical Joy vs. Happiness: Finding Lasting Joy During Christmas and Every Day

What Is the Difference Between Joy and Happiness?

Understanding that there is a difference between joy and happiness changes everything about how we approach life, especially during challenging seasons like…Christmas.

Happiness is circumstantial. It comes and goes with the situation we’re in, our feelings, our relationships, even the balance in our bank accounts. When good things happen, we feel happy. When difficulties arise, happiness fades.

Joy, however, is rooted in something unchanging. Joy is rooted in God is and what He has accomplished for us in Christ. Joy doesn’t depend on our circumstances; it transcends them. How often, in the Bible, are people rejoicing even in difficult times, even from prison?

This distinction between joy and happiness matters a great deal for Christians seeking contentment that lasts. When you come in contact with a believer that is strong in their faith, their joy shines through. They may be talking to you about a sad or unpleasant event, and they may be unhappy about it, but their joy of life shines through.

Where Does True Joy Come From According to the Bible?

Our culture looks for the joy comes from getting what we want—the perfect Christmas morning, the ideal family gathering, the Instagram-worthy moment, the raise, the promotion, the bit of good news. Scripture, however, points us to a different source.

Romans 15:13 says “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus told His disciples, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11).

Joy isn’t found in worldly things, or even earthly victories; it’s found in the presence of God. When we seek Him, we discover a joy that no amount of money can buy. That is the joy that sustains us through every season.

It’s easy to feel joy during good times, but biblical joy becomes clearest when we face hardship.

Can You Have Joy During Hard Times?

Read James 1:2-4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

James isn’t suggesting we should be happy about suffering. He’s telling us that God is at work even in our hardest moments, refining our faith and deepening our dependence on Him. We can have joy, not because everything is wonderful, but because we trust God and it is God that holds everything together.

You will find yourself in a difficult season; grieving a loved one, struggling financially, dealing with family conflict, or battling loneliness. Or maybe the holidays just have you down…Christmas rarely lives up to our expectations. Instagram, Hallmark, and Pinterest set us up to fail every day of the Christmas season. Our culture, especially during hard times, demands that you hide behind a smile and pretend everything is fine. Don’t pretend. Open you Bible and read. Open your heart and pray. Seek the joy that only a child of God can understand.

5 Practical Ways to Choose Joy Every Day (Including Christmas)

Joy is both a gift from God and a choice we make. Cultivate joy by fixing your eyes on Christ rather than on your circumstances.

Here are five biblical ways to choose joy daily:

1. Practice Gratitude in All Circumstances

Gratitude redirects our focus from what we lack to what God has already given us. Even on hard days, thank God for His faithfulness, His presence, and His promises. Start a simple gratitude list and add to it daily, especially during difficult seasons.

2. Saturate Your Mind with Scripture

The more we fill our minds with God’s truth, the less we’ll be controlled by our feelings. Scripture reminds us who God is and what He’s done, anchoring our joy in reality rather than emotion. Memorize verses about God’s character and goodness.

3. Remember the Gospel Daily

Christmas isn’t just about family traditions or holiday cheer. Christmas is about the incarnation. God entered our broken world to rescue us. Christ lived the life we couldn’t live, died the death we deserved, and rose again to give us eternal life. That truth sustains joy even in the hardest seasons.

4. Connect with Other Believers

The body of Christ encourages, strengthens, and reminds us of God’s goodness when we can’t see it clearly ourselves. Join a small group, attend church regularly, or simply call a brother or sister in Christ when you’re struggling.

5. Maintain Constant Prayer

Staying connected to God through prayer keeps us tethered to the source of all joy. Bring your burdens, doubts, and weariness to Him. Prayer transforms our perspective from earthly to eternal.

Finding Real Joy This Christmas and Throughout the Year

As we navigate this Christmas season and the everyday moments that follow, let go of the pressure to manufacture happiness in a series of perfect moments and instead receive the gift of joy that God freely offers.

It’s the joy of knowing we are deeply loved, fully forgiven, and eternally secure in Christ. It’s the joy of His presence with us through every high and low. It’s the joy that the world cannot give and the world cannot take away.
