Obey God Rather Than Men – When the Pressure Is On, What Will You Do?

Facing Prison and Possible Death, Peter Stood Firm

Acts 5:29

They had already been warned once. The authorities told them: stop teaching and stop talking about Jesus. Stop. But, Peter and the apostles wouldn’t stop.

They went right back to preaching. So they were arrested. Imprisoned. And during the night, an angel opened the prison doors, brought them out, and told them to go stand in the temple and keep speaking.

So they did. And they were arrested again.

And when they were dragged before the authorities a second time — the same authorities who had already warned them and imprisoned them, Peter didn’t flinch. He said: We must obey God rather than men. There was no question in Peter’s mind who had ultimate authority over him.

Not Just an Option

Peter wasn’t saying ‘eh, we want to keep doing this.’ Peter was saying, “We must” do this. Obeying God wasn’t just one of the options considered by the apostles, it was the only option.

That’s the part most of us can’t quite get to. We obey God when it’s easy and convenient. Maybe we obey God around some people, but not others. Or, in private, but not in public. But when the pressure rises, we look for other options. Maybe, we make small negotiations with ourselves looking for a gray area. We try to avoid standing out from the crowd or making waves.

Peter didn’t do that. There were no other options for him. And, really, we’re fooling ourselves if we think that there are other options for us.

When the Pressure Is On

We’re not likely to stand before government authorities and be told to deny our faith. And, we should praise God for that, everyday! But, there is pressure, everyday. It’s the pressure to get along with the world. The pressure to stay quiet. The pressure to stay comfortable. The social cost of speaking and living your faith is sometimes more than we think we can handle.

So, what do you do when you feel the pressure? Your friend or neighbor might judge you. Your boss might think you’re one of ‘those people.’ Do you give in to the world around you?

Acts 5:29

This verse is best read in context with Acts 5:17-32. The apostles face real legal persecution and physical threat, but they never compromise. The events depicted here may seem extreme to us, in this world, but they are a lesson to us all. First, we are so blessed that we can live and speak our faith without fear of legal persecution or physical harm. Second, we should never stop living and speaking our faith — that is what God calls us to do. Will we obey him or will we compromise in fear?

As the events with the apostles unfold, the chapter ends with Acts 5:42 saying, about the apostles, “and every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.”

The Study

Obey God Rather Than Men is the fifth and final study in Volume 1: Do Not Fear Man, part of the Ensnared No More: Daily Moments of Discernment series.

Each Moment is designed to be brief but meaningful — deeper than a quick devotional, but still something you can work through in the middle of a real, busy day. No fluff. No filler. Just Scripture, honest reflection, and space to let God’s Word do what it does.

In this study, you’ll find the full passage in context, a look at what it actually means (including the translation of certain words from the original language that make the message in the verse even stronger), reflection questions that will challenge you to examine where the fear of man might be quietly shaping your choices, and space to pray and journal your response.

It’s not long. It is honest. And it might change the way you walk into your next hard conversation.

It’s designed to be deeper than a quick devotional, but still doable in real life.
